BACK UP Health Project

Project Description

HIV, TB and Malaria response in Pakistan is mainly dependent on Global Fund support. In absence of Global Fund formal presence at the country level Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) are key in coordination of Global Fund grants.  CCM is central to the Global Fund commitment to local ownership and participatory decision making. The presence and meaningful engagement of CSOs, KPs and PLWDs at the CCM is key to the successful fight against diseases, but unfortunately due to one reason or the other contribution of CSOs, KPs and PLWDs at CCM fora is confronted with multiple challenges including lack of capacity.

Keeping same in view the APLHIV implemented a multi-country Asia Pacific Regional project along with Nepal, Sri Lanka, and PNG. The project aimed to increase the effectiveness of people living with diseases [HIV, TB and Malaria], Key Populations & civil society’s engagement & contributions in GF processes and CCM in Pakistan. The project named as “BACK UP Health” visioned an empowered Civil Society, Communities and people living with diseases [HIV, TB and Malaria] to have meaningful engagement at the CCM fora. The APLHIV being the implementing partner in Pakistan launched the project with “Needs Assessment” to identify the areas where CSO, KPs and PLWDs CCM members and their constituencies need capacity building. Over 100 members from CSOs, CBOs, HIV/TB/Malaria activists/leaders/CCM members were trained during 2019 and during 2020 the project facilitated for consultative process to review the provincial and Pakistan AIDS Strategies and for development of Funding requests for Global Fund. The project also enabled APLHIV to engage Parliamentarians for better health responses.
