Emergency Relief Activities During 2022 Floods

Project Description

Flooding poses major problems to PLHIV in terms of their everyday lives, affecting livelihoods, work, income, and living conditions. The factors threatening them under normal conditions-poverty, malnutrition, unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene, limited access to health facilities, a weak health status, and stigma – are intensified by _flood-related breakdown of infrastructure, insecurity, malnutrition, and diseases evolving over the course of a flood. A potential dual risk exists for their health: the increased risk both of infection and disease due to the inaccessibility of health services and disruption in continuation of antiretroviral treatment.

Anticipating the situation and the problems that may arise for PLHIV across the country the APLHIV re-initiated its Emergency Response Cell (ERC) that had previously worked successfully to provide access to ARVs during COVID-19 lockdowns. APLHIV proactively started contacting PLHIV from its own database as well as spreading the word out via various platforms to ascertain the availability of ARVs with PLHIV as well as addressing any future issues related to access to ART Centers due to displacement. Hundreds of PLHIV were provided with ARVs at their doorsteps through HIV CSGs, many more were guided and linked with their nearest ART centers for timely refills.

Moreover, a donation drive was carried out by APLHIV staff to raise money for immediate relief as well as rebuilding and rehabilitation efforts of PLHIV in flood affected areas. A sizeable amount was raised because of the above activities and was distributed via trackable means to dozens of PLHIV across the country who had lost everything to the raging floods. The recipients were all praised for APLHIV and thankful for their efforts during this time of need and despair.
